GP 09-1.  Authority

W. Va. Code § 18B-1-6

GP 09-2.  Purpose

Remediation is the process that occurs following the failure of a course, as defined in Institutional Policy GP-04: Grading Scale, and is designed to assure that the core competencies in the respective course has been met.

GP 09-3.  General Provisions

3.1

The program for remediation is recommended and/or supervised by the faculty responsible for the course that was failed.  The remediation plan, approved by the Curriculum Committee and/or the Associate Dean of Graduate Programs, will be included in detail within each course syllabus.  The authority to assign a remediation course grade and final course grade lies with the course directors pursuant to Institutional Policy E-11:  Grading Authority.

3.2

No student may begin remediation until (a) the Associate Dean of Graduate Programs approves the remediation and grants the student written permission to begin and (b) the student pays the appropriate remediation fees.

3.3

Course failures are also governed by WVSOM’s policies on promotion/failure, academically-at-risk status, and dismissal.

GP 09-4.  Course Failures

4.1

Students who fail a course are remanded to the Graduate Academic Performance Committee and may be permitted to remediate that course pursuant to Institutional Policy GP-01:  Academic and Professional Standards. A student may remediate no more than one (1) course per academic year.  The remediation must take place by the end of the second week of June of the same academic year.  The failure of two (2) or more courses in one semester or failure of a remediated course will result in the student being remanded to the Graduate Academic Performance Committee.

4.2

A student is not eligible for remediation if the course failure was due to an unexcused absence.

4.3

Students must complete the remediation with a passing grade of not less than 70%.

4.4

If a student completes a remediated course with a passing grade, the student’s transcript will report a grade of C-.  The grade of C- and numerical grade of 70% will be used to calculate the student’s grade point average and class standing.

4.5

If a student fails to complete a remediated course with a passing grade, the student’s transcript will reflect a grade of F and is considered a course failure. The student’s academic record and professionalism record will be remanded to the Graduate Academic Performance Committee for review and recommendation to the Associate Dean of Graduate Medical Programs pursuant to Institutional Policy GP-01:  Academic and Professional Standards.

GP 09-5.  Implementation of Policy

This policy will be implemented using applicable WVSOM policies and/or procedures.
