W. Va. Code § 18B-1-6
Remediation is the process that occurs following the failure by a student in a given course or clinical rotation and is designed to assure that the core competencies in the respective courses or clinical rotations have been met.
The program for remediation is recommended and/or supervised by the faculty responsible for the course or clinical rotation that was failed. The remediation plan, approved by the Curriculum Committee and/or the appropriate Associate Dean, will be included in detail within each course syllabus and in the Clinical Education manual. The authority to assign a remediation course grade and final course grade lies with the Associate Dean for Preclinical Education for Years 1 and 2 and the Associate Dean for Predoctoral Clinical Education for Years 3 and 4 pursuant to Institutional Policy E-11: Grading Authority.
No student may begin remediation until (a) the appropriate Associate Dean approves the remediation and grants the student written permission to begin and (b) the student pays the appropriate remediation fees.
Course failures are also governed by WVSOM’s policies on promotion/failure, academically-at-risk status, and dismissal. Clinical rotation failures are also governed by WVSOM’s policies on clinical rotations, academically-at-risk status, and dismissal.
Year 1 and Year 2 students who fail one course during one academic year may be permitted to remediate that course pursuant to Institutional Policy DO-01: Academic and Professional Standards.
Year 1 students must complete the remediation with a passing grade of not less than 70% during the summer following Year 1 in order to be permitted to begin Year 2.
Year 2 students must complete the remediation with a passing grade of not less than 70% during the summer following Year 2 in order to be permitted to begin Year 3 clinical rotations.
If a student completes a remediated course with a passing grade, the student’s transcript will reflect the original course grade, the remediated course grade, and a grade of 70. The grade of 70 will be used to calculate the student’s grade point average and class standing.
If a student fails to complete a remediated course with a passing grade it is considered a course failure. The student’s academic record and professionalism record will be remanded to the Student Promotions Committee for review and recommendation to the Associate Dean for Preclinical Education pursuant to Institutional Policy DO-01: Academic and Professional Standards.
Students will not be permitted to remediate more than one failed course in each academic year.
All clinical course failures will be referred to the Student Promotions Committee per Institutional Policy DO-13: Grading Policies and Procedures - Clinical Rotations.
Year 3 and Year 4 students who fail a clinical course for credit during one academic year may be permitted to remediate that clinical course through an equivalent clinical rotation pursuant to Institutional Policy DO-13.
Year 3 students must complete the remediation with a passing grade of not less than 70% in order to be permitted to begin Year 4 clinical rotations.
Year 4 students must complete the remediation with a passing grade of not less than 70% prior to graduation.
