Sara Maguina knew she wanted to practice medicine in underserved communities — and, having been raised with her grandparents nearby, she hoped to eventually work with elderly populations. “I was looking for a school that had a philosophy of shaping health care providers who serve those who are most in need,” she said, adding that her interview further influenced her decision to attend WVSOM. “Everyone made me feel like I was at home. They seemed curious about my path and were confident I could succeed.”
Upon joining WVSOM’s Class of 2021, Maguina took part in WVSOM’s Rural Health Initiative as well as student organizations such as the geriatrics club and the Health Yeah! committee, where she learned the importance of nutrition as an aspect of preventive medicine. “I believe in the power of healthy habits and the impact they have on a person’s well-being,” she said. Maguina said she’s found it refreshing to meet peers with similar ideals and goals during her time at the school. “The social environment at WVSOM is conducive to good education, nurtures long-lasting friendships, and encourages self-discovery and growth.”
