How should letters of recommendation be submitted to WVSOM?

Letters of recommendation are accepted via AACOMAS, Interfolio, Virtual Evals and by U.S. mail. Any letters sent by mail must include original signature and should be printed on letterhead. West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine
Admissions Office
400 Lee Street North

What is the requirement for letters of recommendation?

WVSOM requires two letters of recommendation (non-relatives): one from an osteopathic physician (non-relative); one from a pre-med committee member or a science faculty member who instructed you.

Does WVSOM require a letter of recommendation from an osteopathic physician?

Yes - a letter from an osteopathic physician is required to complete your file.  Note: Letters of recommendation are verified. It will be helpful if your osteopathic physician provides, within the letter, the state in which they are licensed and their license number.

How can I locate a D.O. in my area?

You can access the AOA's directory of osteopathic physician's online by clicking here.

Have you received my letters of recommendation?

Letters of recommendation, if sent by U.S. mail, will be posted to your online checklist.  Any letters submitted via AACOMAS, Interfolio or Virtual Evals can be accessed and reviewed by our office but are not printed or posted to your online checklist until you are officially invited for an interview.

What is the Admissions Committee looking for in competitive applicants?

Each application is reviewed considering a variety of factors: The science GPA average is around 3.54 and the total MCAT average is around 501.  The Admissions Committee will also look for osteopathic awareness, clinical experience, recommendation letters, and consider your personal statement while reviewing your application.

My decision status says "Decision Deferred". What does that mean?

The "Decision Deferred" status indicates a hold status. The Admissions Committee will periodically revisit files which were initially deferred. For example, your application may be placed on hold because we are awaiting additional official MCAT scores or fall grades. Your file could also be on hold if the Admissions Committee is unable to reach a decision at the time of review. Any changes in your status will be communicated by e-mail.

Can I schedule an interview & when?

The decision to offer an interview will be determined by the Director of Admissions and the Assistant Director of Admission after review of your application; this is an ongoing process from September through March.  You will be notified by e-mail if you have been invited to interview and the date options/details will be made available to you at that time.

I've interviewed at WVSOM. Now, I would like to know if the Admissions Committee has reviewed my file & when I will hear back?

The Admissions Committee meets on a weekly basis to review all completed files. Notification is generally within two weeks. The decision will be posted in your MyWVSOM account on the "Application Status" app, and you will receive an e-mail with any status change.
