The mission of the Clinical Evaluation Center (CEC) is to educate lifelong learners from multiple disciplines via innovative and state-of-the-art teaching and assessment modalities. The CEC is dedicated to serve, first and foremost, the students of the WVSOM community and offers expanded opportunities to promote collaboration and research amongst multiple health care teams.
The CEC serves as a leader in the advancement of scientific knowledge through learning opportunities in an academic patient-centered environment designed for the improvement of patient safety and delivery of quality patient care.
The practice of medicine is constantly changing. Innovative resources are needed to prepare the student physician for advances in patient care and treatment. WVSOM's Clinical Evaluation Center possesses 24 exam rooms, 14 dedicated simulation rooms, as well as debriefing areas and classrooms specifically designed for the multifunctional needs of students, faculty and the local community.
Within weeks of arriving on campus, first-year students begin to learn the critical importance of effective communication through medical simulations utilizing standardized patients. Throughout their curriculum, students open, solve and close cases with the assistance of standardized patients and medical simulators. The center provides a safe and adaptive learning environment for students to practice what they are learning in the classroom and build confidence as they progress in their training.
From suturing and casting labs to advanced cardiac life support, the CEC offers students what they need to hone their medical expertise. To prepare for the demands of future medical practices, students immerse themselves in electronic health records and the effective practice and assessment required by modern medical documentation. Physicians, nurses and other educational staff members provide hands-on instruction to individuals and groups.
In addition to WVSOM students and faculty, the CEC has been embraced by medical residents and affiliated institutions. Utilizing WVSOM's statewide campus system of approximately 50 hospitals, medical preceptors throughout the Mountain State have access to medical simulation events that illuminate how new training techniques are preparing the next generation of rural physicians.
