Research Interests

At present the laboratory is pursuing three projects:

  1. Glial response in a jaw muscle pain model The central hypothesis of this project is that glial cell activation after a unilateral repetitive acidic saline injection into the masseter muscle is part of a cascade of events that elicit gender-specific, bilateral primary afferent neuron neuroplastic changes in the trigeminal system and result in persistent jaw muscle pain.
     
  2. Role of glial senescence in aging of the mouse brain Previous studies have established that alterations in the number and phenotype of astrocytes and microglia correlate with loss of function associated with aging in the hippocampus and hypothalamus. The central hypothesis of this project is that the activity of glia is altered with aging and glia no longer provide for neuronal maintenance.
     
  3. Role of cytokines/chemokines in muscle repair. Previous studies have determined that masseter lacks the capacity to repair effectively in response to injury.
