A Letter from President Nemitz

Dear Members of the Class of 2020:

After considering all options, using the most current information available to me, and analyzing all factors, I have come to the decision that I have no choice but to cancel your Graduation Ceremony.  I recognize that this decision impacts many lives, most especially, you and your families.

The decision was made with the highest consideration for the health and safety of you, your families and friends, WVSOM faculty and staff, and the Lewisburg community.  It was also made with the understanding that WV Governor Jim Justice is not allowing large group gatherings to occur; he announced this week that the public school system in West Virginia will not reopen this year, therefore affecting all high school graduations.  The sad reality is that all graduations in the state have either been cancelled or postponed.

I recognize that you deserve to be acknowledged for your accomplishments, both collectively as a class and individually. I will be working with your class leadership and my staff to create a virtual Graduation Ceremony, in addition a virtual Graduation Award Ceremony will also be created.  I have already collected many of your ideas for a virtual ceremony and I am reviewing what other institutions are doing.  I welcome your input.

I am also extending an invitation to you to participate in the 2021 Graduation Ceremony.  I hope you will be able to come back to campus for a class reunion and the graduation ceremony.

I am exploring options regarding how to spend class funds and will follow-up with you.

Please contact Cindi Knight in the WVSOM Store regarding reimbursement for your cap and gown at cknight@osteo.wvsom.edu or 304 647-6299.

In closing, I am very sad that I have to cancel your graduation.  I had hoped that it would turn out differently; we are unfortunately in an unprecedented time in our country’s history.  I appreciate your understanding regarding this decision.  While this is a loss, I encourage you to find ways to celebrate your incredible achievement with your family members and friends.

Sincerely,

Jim Nemitz, Ph.D.
