A new feature has been added to our website mapping COVID-19 cases in WV using data reported by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.

The Clinical and Translational Science Center (CTSC) building (the Silo Lane house) has been closed to WVSOM employees and students until further notice. WVSOM personnel are not to enter the building for any reason.

Dear Community Members,

I want to provide you with an update on what WVSOM is doing regarding the COVID-19 crisis.  

WVSOM is abiding by the Governor’s Stay At Home Order.  The following actions have been taken:

  • All WVSOM students have been told to Stay at Home.  Students who have left the Lewisburg area for Spring Break have been told NOT to return to campus at this time and to stay where they are.  All on-campus classes and labs have been suspended for the remainder of the semester.  A modified curriculum will be delivered electronically so students can complete the school year in their home locations. Please note that over a hundred students decided not to go away for Spring Break and are therefore in the community; these students have been told to Stay at Home to continue their studies.
  • Students will NOT be allowed on campus and will NOT have access to facilities unless they have been given permission in order to continue their studies, ex. poor internet signal at home.
  • All WVSOM employees have been told to Stay at Home unless they have an essential responsibility that requires them to be on campus in order for the school to remain operational to deliver the curriculum on-line and other critical functions.  All employees who are sick and/or have family members who are sick or have been exposed to the novel coronavirus have been told to Stay at Home.  The WVSOM O’Café and Founders’ Activity Center (gym) are closed to employees and students at this time.
  • The WVSOM campus facilities are closed to the public at this time. 

The safety of our community and our students are of paramount concern.  We are doing everything we can at WVSOM to keep our community safe during this national crisis.  I will continue to keep you updated as things change.  I encourage you to visit our coronavirus webpage at http://www.wvsom.edu/news/coronavirus 

In closing, I am asking everyone to do their part and follow the Governor’s directive to Stay At Home to protect yourself and others.  Only go to public places if you are well and minimize the amount of time you are in those places, such as grocery stores.  I am also asking you to adhere to CDC guidelines and practice good hygiene, including regular hand washing and social distancing.  Let’s keep ourselves and our community safe!

OMS1 & OMS2 Students (Updates for the week of March 23)

In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, we’ve implemented the following changes.

For all students:

  1. Students who traveled out of the state are asked NOT to return to the Lewisburg area after Spring Break. 
  2. Students remaining in Lewisburg over Spring Break are instructed NOT to return to campus without prior authorization.  All student Prox card access to campus buildings has been deactivated until further notice.  Students will be notified when they are allowed back on campus.  We are making arrangements to accommodate limited numbers of students who do not have home internet access and will be arranging times that students can get access to printers. 
  3. As previously notified, all remaining labs and on-campus classes are suspended. We will deliver the remainder of the didactic curriculum for this year via distance learning using WebEx.  You will be getting instructions on how to view each lecture in real time from your home. Be sure to continue checking your school email.
  4. Faculty will maintain office hours via WebEx.  Instructions on how to take advantage of this will be forthcoming.
  5. All remaining exams will be administered on-line utilizing virtual proctoring software.  You are still expected to adhere to your honor code.

For first year students:

  1. Your remaining anatomy labs will be administered virtually.  The anatomy faculty are preparing videos to assist your learning.  As a reminder, these videos are not to be shared for any reason.
  2. We are making arrangements for your final clinical skills lab to be done from home.  Refer to the CS1 Course Director’s email for detailed instructions.  Those components of Clinical Skills that cannot be done from home will be shifted to your CS2 course in the second year curriculum.
  3. The remaining OPP1 labs have been cancelled and will be shifted to your OPP2 course in the second year curriculum. Monitor your school email for updates from the OPP1 Course Director for details on how the remainder of the course will be handled.
  4. We now have the capability for students to respond to polling questions via computer or mobile device.  Two brief instructional videos are now available on eMedley in the Class of 2023 section, titled TurningPoint Computer Instructions and TurningPoint Mobile Instructions.  

For second year students:

  1. We now have the capability for students to respond to polling questions via computer or mobile device.  Two brief instructional videos are now available on eMedley in the Class of 2022 section, titled TurningPoint Computer Instructions and TurningPoint Mobile Instructions.  
  2. Your OSCE will be converted to an on-line experience.  You will receive more instructions regarding this at a later date. An IPE assignment is forthcoming and will be listed in the Skin II and MPF course. Be sure to monitor school emails and eMedley for upcoming information concerning OSCEs and the IPE.
  3. The OPP2 lab final practical has been cancelled. Once approved, an updated OPP2 course syllabus will be posted reflecting the change. Refer to the OPP2 lab Course Director’s email on specific changes to the course and grading.
  4. PPD skin testing on campus has been cancelled. You may have your PPD (or a Quantiferon TB Gold blood test) performed by your health provider.  Please upload the results of this test to your CastleBranch account. 
  5. Please continue with the process of setting up your background check and drug screen through CastleBranch. You can take the drug screen form to any LabCorp location.  If you are still in Lewisburg, please use the Davis Stuart LabCorp.  Please use your best judgement when completing the drug screen.  We recommend calling ahead to the selected LabCorp to see what the protocol is for entering the facility.  Contact the SWC office if you have any issues. We will do our best to help in any way we can.
  6. You will be expected to report to your State Wide Campus site at least one week early to allow for the BLS course and mask fitting. Please note  you may need to do so earlier than that in order to home quarantine for two weeks (a total of three weeks early) prior to beginning.
  7. We plan on administering the COMSAE as scheduled.  You may take this from your home.
  8. For those either mandated to take the prep course, or who wish to do so, we will deliver this content virtually.

Thank you to all our student doctors for your continued patience and professionalism.  We will continue to do the best we can to make sure you get what you need when you need it.

While we are trying to anticipate every possibility, things may continue to change in unexpected ways and we may need to modify instructions. Continue to monitor your school email as this is the way we communicate official school updates. The institution is trying to the best of its abilities to keep you and the community safe and to keep you on track this academic year in the face of a national crisis. In an email from HR on March 24, employees were notified that designated essential staff who are still reporting to campus in any capacity need to monitor symptoms and check their own temperature twice a day. Family members of these employees are also recommended to monitor symptoms. If at any point the employee, or a household member, becomes sick or is exposed to someone with COVID-19, they will need to notify HR and stay home.

The IT Department has added a “Remote Technology Resources” page under the WVSOM COVID-19 Update web page to centralize technology needs as we deal with COVID-19 concerns.  This consolidates all technical references that we have made recently for working remotely and for the utilization of WebEx for lectures/conferencing.

We will be distributing our IT Department contact cards with IT managers and on-call phone numbers to campus departments.

We are collaborating with Media Services to insure coverage of faculty lectures using WebEx.  Student email invitations for the week of March 30th have been sent.  IT staff supporting faculty from the classrooms will be:  Kathy Pauley, Chad Burns, and Ken Miller.  Additionally, we will be meeting next week to confirm the remote support to faculty working from home, as those needs may arise.

The IT Department continues to work with HR and approved WVSOM staff for working from home connectivity.  If you encounter issues or need additional assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us.

OMS3 Students

  • Effective Friday March 20, 2020 at 5:00 all students will be removed from clinical rotations. The remainder of current rotations will be completed online. Follow the syllabi marked as the rotation name and “OLM” for Online Learning Module. These will be available no later than Monday March 23, 2020.
  • Students have received notice by email as to how grades will be handled for the current rotation.
  • As many hospital buildings are closed to non-essential personnel, you will be taking your COMAT exams at home. The dates will be arranged by your Regional Deans and Directors.
  • Our hope and plan is to get you back on rotations as soon as possible. There are a few hospitals that have already committed to resuming rotations at the end of the two week furlough.
  • We are strongly recommending that you shelter in place for your two weeks of online learning. This means leaving your home for only essential activity and avoiding all travel. You are asked to keep a daily diary of any respiratory symptoms or fever. If possible, it would be beneficial to also take your temperature daily.
  • If you choose to travel or otherwise leave the area during the two weeks of online learning, you may need a two week quarantine prior to resuming rotations.

OMS4 Students

  • Based upon the recent AAMC and AACOM two week pause in rotations and the ruling of the COCA approving online education, the following modifications have been instituted:
  1. Effective Friday March 20, 2020 at 5:00 pm, all clinical rotations will stop.
  2. On Monday, March 23, 2020, you will begin a 100% online curriculum to complete your graduation requirements.  Some students may need to complete a rural rotation and will be contacted as to how this will take place.
  3. Please understand that this does not excuse you from finishing the curriculum. The online modules will be monitored and assessed.  A Pass/Fail system will be used for the last few rotations.
  4. Any travel is strongly discouraged and you are advises to adhere to your state and local guidelines while completing your educational requirements.
  • Staying indoors at your current location except for essentials would be the prudent course.
  • Your Regional Deans and Directors will share with you on an individual basis as to how to address the rotations that you have left.
  • As a reference, modified syllabi have been created and will soon be placed in the Clinical Ed Manual 2020OLM (online learning module) no later than Monday March 23, 2020.

OMS1 & OMS2 Students

We continue to monitor the situation to adjust our plans accordingly.  We can’t predict what will happen but be assured that we’re planning for every eventuality we can think of and making a number of contingency plans.  What we do believe is that, unfortunately, the situation is likely to get worse before it gets better.  With that in mind, please pay attention to the items listed below and continue to monitor your school email for official updates.

If you choose to leave the Lewisburg area for Spring Break you should plan on having to self-quarantine for 14 days upon your return.  Also, we anticipate that more restrictions will be in place within the week and I believe quarantine is more likely than not to be mandated.  The only prudent course of action is to be prepared. 
We have been approved to deliver the curriculum on-line.  This means that you can do much of your coursework remotely which will help us keep you on schedule.  Unfortunately, those things that require contact cannot be delivered remotely – more on that below.
While we are prepared to deliver exams on-line, we recognize that not all students have stable internet.  Should you have connectivity issues or issues with ExamN, our plan is to have you come to campus and take a paper copy of the test here (observing appropriate spacing and adhering to no more than 10 persons per room).  In these cases, we’ll expect you to be on campus within 15-20 minutes.  Obviously, this means that you’ll need to be physically in the area.
For those who are going to be staying here over Spring Break, we’d love to try and help you knock out some of those aforementioned activities that require contact.  For first year students staying, the OPP faculty have arranged to try and get your remaining OPP labs taken care of and for second year students staying, arrangements are being made to begin taking care of your PPD’s.  If we can get these done then there will be that much less to make up if we have to go to solely on-line delivery.  We’ll be sending out a survey to gauge interest in these later today, please pay attention and reply quickly.

As always, we sincerely thank you for your patience, professionalism, and understanding.  We honestly do not know where this is heading but all of the faculty and administration are committed to making sure you get the education you need and that you remain on track for graduation.  We will most certainly see a few more curveballs but we’ll figure out a way to handle them.  Your schedules have already been impacted and more changes are likely.  Regardless, work with us and we’ll get through this.

The Q&A for today has been canceled due to the limitation on group gatherings but the Preclinical Associate Dean is still available to answer any of your questions.

Here is the latest update from the Greenbrier County COVID-19 Task Force. This group is made up of workers in health care, education, government, business, transportation, non-profits, and churches.

CALL SUMMARY: Greenbrier County COVID-19 Call, 3/18/2020

MARCH 18, 2020 UPDATE

The Greater Greenbrier COVID-19 Task Force met this morning via conference call and reports the following information.

1) GREENBRIER COUNTY SCHOOLS. Meals will continue to be served at all 13 schools this week. 900+ deliveries via bus will be added tomorrow.

Additional meal sites will be available at Williamsburg Community Center, Renick Fire Dept, Alvon UMC, & Marvel Center tomorrow also. Contingencies will be in place if there are changes to the meal distribution process next week.

2) GREENBRIER COUNTY HEALTH DEPT. Mass gatherings are officially limited to 50 people by the CDC but the White House is recommending that we limit gatherings to 10. Err on the side of caution and limit gatherings to 10.

This includes churches and sports. We have our first positive case in WV in the eastern panhandle. There are none locally but we are testing and receiving numerous calls. We encourage folks to talk to their primary care provider first if possible. One area of concern is that we have an extreme shortage of testing supplies and personal protective equipment. We want to test more, but we can’t do that yet due to lack of tests from the federal government. We greatly appreciate local vendors working to help supply our first responders.

3) WSS EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES. We desperately need personal protective equipment and are seeking other sources so we can continue serving the public.

4) GREENBRIER VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER. Anticipating increased volume in the coming weeks, we are preparing for that possibility and exploring all options for providing effective service to patients. We too are seeking additional supplies of personal protective equipment.

5) ROBERT C BYRD CLINIC. We are limiting access to two entrances and screening all patients via phone before they arrive. Office hours are reduced to 8am-5pm Monday-Friday only.

6) HIGH ROCKS. We are offering free evening meals to students 18 & under at The Hub in Lewisburg. Call 304-647-4994 by 230pm to order a meal. Adult meals are $5.

7) COMMITTEE ON AGING. In-home services and meals on wheels continue. Grab & go hot meals are provided curbside in Fairlea and Rupert. Grocery shopping service is available to folks who need it. Wellness-check phone calls are being made to clients.

8- ALDERSON MINISTERIAL ASSOCIATION. All Lenten lunches are cancelled. The food pantry continues via curbside service.

9) LONG TERM RECOVERY. Over 30 volunteers signed up yesterday. We will need volunteers next week to assist with food distribution. If you are healthy, between the ages of 18-60, and pass a background check, please send an email to volunteer@ggltrc.org.

10) UNITED WAY. United Way of Greenbrier Valley is aware that a Facebook post regarding United Way providing financial assistance has gone viral and believes it was started by an individual who contacted Indiana 211 and received assistance, who wanted to share it with good intentions. The number listed on their post is the direct line for Indiana 211, and the assistance it refers to is related to United Way of Central Indiana’s

COVID-19 fund. Each United Way across the country is handling community support in different ways depending on the need; however, this does not mean United Ways have a financial assistance program in place. United Way of Greenbrier Valley is exploring ways in which to support local groups and programs specific to COVID-19.

11) STATE OFFICES CLOSING. After today, all non-essential state offices will close as folks will be working from home. Expect this trend of workplaces and gathering places closing to continue as we practice social distancing on a larger scale to slow the spread of the virus.

12) SMALL BUSINESSES. With the closing of restaurants and small businesses, please remember you can still order takeout, buy a gift card, and support local businesses that always support us throughout this difficult time.

Update from the yesterday’s meeting (March 16th) of the Greater Greenbrier COVID-19 Task Force.

1) GREENBRIER COUNTY SCHOOLS. Grab & go feeding sites began today. Bus drivers are calling every student to determine who needs deliveries, and those begin Thursday. Additional sites for grab & go also begin Thursday in outlying communities. Teachers are working on instructional materials for students moving forward. Tech specialists are identifying those without internet to deliver materials to those students.

2) HEALTH DEPT. Nationwide, the CDC is limiting events to 50 people. Indoors or outdoors. For the next 8 weeks. We already implemented this locally, but it is now policy nationwide. And we can expect it to last 8 weeks. Also, the vulnerable population which includes seniors, those with pre-existing conditions, pregnant moms, and those with compromised immune systems.

3) GREENBRIER VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER. Everyone will be directed to one of two entrances--ER door and front door. Everyone will be screened per CDC instructions. A screening involves a temperature check and three questions assessing risk for exposure.

4) HOMELAND SECURITY. The goal is to gain access to extra health supplies for our senior centers and health care facilities. Hopefully, that will happen this week.

5) WVSOM/HEALTH ALLIANCE. Focused on educating the public right now so folks (in the health care field and the general public) hold greater awareness. They are printing materials for the public right now and will disseminate them widely. They also are partnering with the Health Dept to offer a virtual food handler’s class.

6) COMMITTEE ON AGING. All non-essential senior activities are cancelled. Both centers in Fairlea & Rupert will remain open. Meals on Wheels will continue. Additional drive-by or delivery hot meals for those who normally come to the center to eat will be provided. In-home personal care services will continue, but clients will be called first to ensure they are not ill before sending staff to their home. The phones will be answered as usual.

7) GGLTRC. In the event that school personnel need assistance with meal delivery, we want to build a volunteer network now and get them ready to serve if needed. In the event food distribution needs to be added, we would operate a central kitchen at the WV State Fair and distribute the food from there across the county. We are also exploring options to provide connections to folks who are socially isolated and need support.

8- GV AIRPORT. The airport is open. Commercial and private flights are operational. However, United Airlines is cutting their air service in half nationwide and that’s an international trend which will likely continue in the near future.

9) COMMUNITIES IN SCHOOLS. 300+ students are under their care, and they plan to contact each and every one to see what sort of support those students need during school closure.

10) FOOD DISTRIBUTION SITES. As of Thursday, these sites will receive meals for students--Marvel, Alvin UMC, Renick Fire Dept, Williamsburg Community Center.

11) VOLUNTEERS. If you are not in a vulnerable population, we want to develop a network of volunteers when they are needed. You must pass a background check, be age 18-60 (or age 15-18 with parental consent), not have traveled in affected areas, and not be symptomatic. *We will continue to meet every other day and keep the community informed. Other task force groups are also forming across the state to serve their local communities.

Faculty and administration continue to evaluate the situation with COVID-19 and plans for adjusting the curriculum accordingly. We base decisions on the guidance of Federal, State and Local authorities including our accrediting bodies. The safety of our students, faculty, staff and community are our top priority.

Students should pay close attention to their email for the most up-to-date information for this evolving situation.

The information below summarizes information you’ve received from administration and your Course Directors regarding changes to courses for the week of March 16 - 20.

OMS1

  • This week’s Team Based Learning (TBL) activity has shifted to an on-line format.
  • No mandatory activities (except OPP lab) are scheduled for the remainder of the week March 16-19.
  • OPP1 labs will shift to on-line posting of instructional videos and quizzes. However, the hands-on portion of the lab will remain mandatory.
  • Friday’s exam will still occur as scheduled. Additional instructions will be provided for the exam to occur at multiple locations on campus to allow smaller group sizes.
  • As you know, we are making several changes to how your educational materials are being delivered over the next several weeks (maybe longer), due to concerns about the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

OMS2

  • All mandatory classes (with the exception of labs and white coat pictures) have been changed to non-mandatory activities.
  • Course Directors will continue to communicate any changes or updates via email.
  • The TBL scheduled for Thursday March 19th will be converted to a Directed Study followed by an on-line quiz.  The Exam Center will be in contact regarding administration of the quiz.
  • OPP2 lab will consist of a required on-line instructional video and quiz. The hands-on portion of the lab is optional.
  • The OPP final practical April 8th has been postponed. Students will be notified once things are finalized.
  • OPP faculty continue to consider options for ‘check offs’ for skills assessments. Students will be contacted soon with our plan to address that.

We continue to monitor the situation and are planning for additional changes after Spring Break.  Please continue to monitor email.  Since things are changing rapidly, we won’t be sending these changes until we’re confident what they are going to be.  You should expect an email on Sunday, 22 March telling you the plan moving forward and what to expect beginning Monday, 23 March.

WVSOM continues to monitor the evolving situation with coronavirus. Faculty and administration continue working on contingency planning for the curriculum and resources for employees.

During the week of March 16 – 20th, WVSOM is endeavoring to remain open and operational in accordance with CDC guidelines.  We are continuing to monitor the situation carefully and are prepared to make immediate changes as needed.   

At present, information from current health officials is that there are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the State of West Virginia, and at this time, the immediate health risk is low. However, in accordance with the CDC, due to the rapidly changing nature of the spread of COVID-19 around the world, it is important to continue preparing for potential community spread.  The federal government is currently considering legislation that could provide additional leave resources to employees.  We will provide additional information as that legislation - Families First Coronavirus Response Act - is considered by the Senate on Monday, March 16th.   

What should I do if I have symptoms of COVID-19?

If you experience symptoms, isolate yourself, do not come to work/school. Students should contact their Associate Dean.

Individuals should seek medical attention by calling a medical professional. Inform medical professionals of your symptoms and any recent travel or potential exposure before going to the health facility.  Please call a medical professional if, in the last 14 days, you:

  • Have traveled to an affected geographic area and have a fever and signs or symptoms of a lower respiratory illness (cough, shortness of breath), or
  • Have a fever with a severe acute lower respiratory illness that requires hospitalization and doesn't have an alternative explanatory diagnosis (e.g., influenza) and no known source of your exposure, or
  • Were in close contact with a confirmed case of COVID-19 and have a fever or signs or symptoms of a lower respiratory illness (cough, shortness of breath)

When you call, please inform them of your symptoms and recent travel or potential exposure before going to the health facility.  Here is a link to the CDC list of symptoms.

As with all contagious illnesses, limit the potential for exposure to other people and do not come to work or school. Take the following actions:

  • Seek medical advice from a medical professional by calling ahead before visiting a health facility
  • Isolate yourself to keep from potentially exposing other people.
  • Notify your supervisor as well as HR at hr@osteo.wvsom.edu that you are ill and will not be able to work. Your supervisor and HR will work with you to develop a plan. 
  • Students, notify Dr. Russ or your Regional Assistant Dean.​

What if I’ve traveled to a country or location where there is a high risk of infection or I’ve been exposed to someone with COVID-19?

Isolate yourself, do not come to work or, and begin monitoring your symptoms using the Self-Monitoring Guide.  If you develop COVID-19 symptoms, contact your healthcare provider. Tell them about your symptoms and your travel or exposure to a COVID-19 patient. Follow their instructions, and see tips below:

  • Monitor your symptoms – Self -Monitoring Guide attached.
  • Stay home except to get medical care.  Before seeking medical care, call ahead and tell them about your recent exposure and your symptoms.
  • Separate yourself from other people and animals in your home.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when coughing or sneezing.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
  • If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
  • Avoid sharing personal household items.
  • Clean all “high-touch” surfaces everyday.
  • Monitor your symptoms.
  • Do not travel while sick.

Employees:  Notify your supervisor as well as HR at hr@osteo.wvsom.edu that you are self-quarantined and will not be able to work.  Your supervisor and HR will work with you to develop a plan. 

Students:  Notify Dr. Russ or your regional Assistant Dean.

Public schools have been closed and/or my child’s school or day care is closed and my child is not sick. I have no other child care arrangements and must stay home with my child.  How will I be paid?

The CDC has urged colleges and universities to modify, where possible, policies that make it difficult to follow the recommendation of self-isolation.  Additionally, if passed, federal legislation will provide leave options that are not currently available to qualifying employees.  WVSOM is finalizing a  Certificate of Illness or Quarantine form which employees can use during this period in lieu of medical documentation when absent due to illness or leave related to the Coronavirus.  We anticipate sending out this updated information as soon as the federal government has finalized the benefit.    

Currently, the following options are available, although not all options will be available in all situations, depending upon the nature of your job responsibilities:

  • Use accrued annual leave
  • Use accrued compensatory time
  • Make up the work on an hour-for-hour basis during the same workweek with supervisory approval
  • Work from home with supervisory approval
  • Request an absence without pay and without paid-time-off accruals
  • Temporary employees do not receive pay for time not worked or any paid time off benefits.

Employees:  Notify your supervisor as well as HR at hr@osteo.wvsom.edu that you are not able to work.  Your supervisor and HR will work with you to develop a plan.

First and second year students can contact Dr. Russ and students in the Statewide Campus can contact their Regional Assistant Dean with any questions or concerns.

The Greater Greenbrier COVID-19 Task Force is meeting M-W-F to discuss issues affecting the county regarding coronavirus, disseminate information and make recommendations.

The Task Force met March 14, 2020 via conference call and have provide the following information.

1) Greenbrier County Schools has a plan in place to feed all students while schools are closed beginning this week. All schools will be open as feeding sites and food will be available via delivery and/or at community sites as well. Details TBA. Volunteers are NOT needed at this time to help with the feeding effort. If that changes--and it may--we will put out a call for help.

2) Greenbrier Health Department reminds everyone that gatherings of 50 people indoors and 150 outdoors are the maximum allowed. This includes churches. In order to keep us all safe, please follow these strong recommendations. They’re working with the hospital and nursing care facilities to ensure they have what they need to care for patients.

3) Greenbrier Valley Medical Center will reduce the number of entrances beginning Monday and screen folks as they enter. Their dining room will be closed to the public as of Sunday.

4) Greenbrier County Courthouse will remain open, though folks are encouraged to do as much business as possible via phone and internet.

5) Homeland Security & Emergency Management is working with healthcare providers to try and provide for their unmet needs of supplies.

6) WVSOM decided to remain open. Students will be screened. Additional e-learning options will be utilized to reduce on-campus crowds. The Center for Rural & Community Health as well as the Greenbrier County Health Alliance Community Ambassadors stand prepared to assist the community when needed.

7) GGLTRC is prepared to coordinate volunteers and resources when needed.

At this point, volunteers are not needed to provide students with meals.

In the event that changes, volunteers will be put in place to assist.

Those wanting to volunteer should email your contact information to volunteer@ggltrc.org. Given that volunteers may work in proximity with individuals under 18, potential volunteers must agree to a background check.

8) All Episcopal & Catholic worship services are cancelled for this Sunday. Old Stone Presbyterian, Bethesda, & others will be broadcasting worship for folks to participate from their homes.

9) The Alderson & Lewisburg/Fairlea Food Pantries plan to proceed with distribution this coming week. Only a few people will be served at a time to limit crowds. Our task force will work with all food pantries to coordinate schedules, provide updates, and distribute COVID-19 information to everyone who receives food.

10) Restaurants & businesses are largely remaining open in the area. The health department is sending them specific guidance on how to properly clean their space and keep it sanitary.

15) The task force meets three times a week. We will continue making updates available as often as possible.

  • The WVSOM Lewisburg campus remains open at this time and classes continue as scheduled.
  • WVSOM Statewide Campus:  Third and Fourth year students should contact their Regional Assistant Dean if they have any concerns or issues with a clinical rotation.

  • Governor Justice has suspended until further notice all official state business travel for state employees outside West Virginia, including international travel. Accordingly, WVSOM will follow the Governor’s directive. 
  • State officials are also strongly encouraging West Virginia citizens to refrain from non-essential travel and to avoid large meetings and gatherings.

  • The WVSOM campus remains open and operational at this time. The academic calendar remains unchanged including Spring Break.
  • Spring Awards Ceremony scheduled on April 2nd has been cancelled.

School Related Travel

  • Effective immediately, WVSOM is suspending all non-essential school-related travel until April 30th.  
  • Effective immediately, WVSOM is prohibiting all school-related international travel through April 30th.

Personal Travel

  • WVSOM is asking all students, faculty and staff who plan to travel internationally or to affected areas in the U.S. for personal reasons to reconsider, taking into account the rapidly changing nature of the situation and the possibility of travel delays, quarantines and prolonged self-isolation when returning.

Reporting Travel

  • Anyone traveling internationally will be required to notify WVSOM. 
  • Travel waiver requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • Information for reporting travel and travel waivers will be released in the coming days. 
  • Self-quarantine  is currently required for 14 days prior to returning to WVSOM if you have traveled to China, Iran, Italy, South Korea or any other country determined by the Centers for Disease Control to be a Warning Level 2 or 3.

WVSOM continues to closely monitor the public health situation related to the coronavirus COVID-19. We remain in contact with the Greenbrier County Health Department and state officials. WVSOM leadership is meeting regularly to review and update planning and to make preparations in the event the disease begins to affect the institution and the local community.

This is an emerging, rapidly evolving situation.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) maintain websites concerning COVID-19.  The COVID 19 CDC link is http://www.cdc.gov/COVID19 and the WV DHHR link is http://coronavirus.wv.gov/

Information Hotline to Address Coronavirus (COVID-19) Concerns

The WV DHHR has partnered with the West Virginia Poison Center to create an information hotline to address public and medical provider questions and concerns regarding COVID-19.  Operators are available 24/7, toll-free at 1-800-887-4304 to provide accurate information about COVID-19, the risk to the public, and the state’s response.

According to the CDC, the best way to avoid contracting COVID-19 is to practice the following interventions:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Not shaking hands - use other noncontact methods of greeting. 
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue or the bend of your arm, not your hands.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
    • If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.

Sick individuals are urged to stay home. Symptoms of COVID-19 include fever, cough and difficulty breathing. If members of the WVSOM community are feeling sick, they are urged to call their health care provider before seeking medical care.

Employees or students who have recently traveled domestically and internationally, had exposure to a known or suspected case of COVID-19, and are experiencing fever, cough or shortness of breath, should contact their primary care provider.  Employees should also contact HR and their Supervisor.  Students should also contact the appropriate Associate Dean.
