West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice has appointed Frederick Morgan, D.O., and Todd Smith, D.O., to the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM) Board of Governors, the body that oversees the financial, business and educational policies under which the school operates.
The new board members, whose appointments became effective July 1, succeed outgoing members Charles Davis, D.O., and Cheryl Schreiber, respectively.
Frederick Morgan, WVSOM Class of 1991, is an orthopedic surgeon at the Orthopedic Center of the Virginias, located at Princeton Community Hospital in Princeton, W.Va., where he is vice chairman of the surgery department. He is a junior board examiner for the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics and a member of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons. Morgan also serves as an assistant professor for WVSOM.
Morgan earned a bachelor’s degree from Concord College before attending WVSOM. After receiving his medical degree, he completed a rotating internship and orthopedic residency at Cuyahoga Falls General Hospital in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. He completed a fellowship in adult reconstructive surgery at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio.
Morgan lives with his family in Bluefield, Va.
Todd Smith, WVSOM Class of 1997, is an internist and president of Blue Ridge Internal Medicine in Princeton, and is affiliated with Princeton Community Hospital. Smith is a chairperson of the hospital’s medicine department and of its Special Care Committee. He is a member of the American College of Osteopathic Internists.
Smith earned a bachelor’s degree from Concord College before attending WVSOM. After receiving his medical degree, he completed an internal medicine residency at Grandview Medical Center in Dayton, Ohio.
He lives with his family in Princeton, W.Va.
Additionally, Aaron Byczynski, WVSOM Class of 2022, was elected to join the Board of Governors as a student representative, replacing Jubel Puthusseril, Class of 2021.
The WVSOM Board of Governors consists of nine lay members appointed by West Virginia’s governor and three elected representatives, one each from the school’s faculty, staff and student body.
