Reading Assignment for Being Mortal

The Class of 2022 has selected to read Being Mortal, by Atul Gawande. Listed below are questions for your reflection over the days ahead. Please answer each question in one essay of no more than 2 typed pages, double-spaced, and submit that essay by June 25. You will be able to upload your document directly by doing the following:

  1. Login to eMedley (https://he.emedley.com/wvsom) using Google Chrome.  If you do not have access, contact Dr. Machelle Linsenmeyer.
  2. Go to educate (click on the three stacked boxes on the left and select educate from the list of tools).
  3. You should see the “Reading Assignment for Being Mortal” listed in your feed.  If you do not see it, you can search for “Being Mortal” in the search bar and it should pull to the top of the list.
  4. Click on View Homework located in the box for the “Reading Assignment for Being Mortal”.
  5. Attach your completed reflection question under Documents at the bottom of the page.
  6. Click Update to submit.

Please note: This is the first assignment in the portfolio that will be tracking your work during your four years at WVSOM.

Your answers will help to shape and inspire your discussions about this text that will take place during Orientation and with WVSOM alumni/ae in early August.

  1. Please describe one ethical dilemma faced by a doctor in the book.  Did you agree or disagree with his/her handling of the issues(s)?
  2. What did you learn about yourself as an aspiring physician? Did you see yourself in any of the individuals in your book?
  3. How did this book influence your personal and career goals as you enter medical school?
